In the spring of 2005, senior management asked Steve to take on Dictaphone's most strategic, but stalled, technology. The situation: his first team meeting almost erupted into a brawl; the 6'5" (Harley biker) engineering lead was not about to give ground to a product manager; and the sales force was pitching this 'cool technology' but not closing deals. Steve took the reins and had to learn the industry, determine customer needs, find new market niches, solidify the roadmap, and turn around the team's dynamics. He had to do it fast, or else. Helped by a cast of supportive (and very interesting) characters, the team turned around; the sales pipeline grew substantially; the product gained momentum and was a cornerstone of the company's successful sale 10 months later for $357 Million.
