Pretty bold statement, don't you think? Product Managers are great people and because of this, I feel like an expert. If you think back to Product Management, even 3 years ago, it was hard chaotic and too much fun. Now it seems easier. Pragmatic Marketing is spreading the good word; Product Managers are getting trained and certified. We have tools to use, we have strong leaders and we now no longer report to Development. We have experts who share, we have communities, we have associations, we have networking sessions, and we have teams that want to help but most of all we have knowledge, experience and success. Leverage what is around you to be an expert. Do not remain static and just be a Product Manager by title - lead, learn and evolve.
Side note: I don't really think I am expert but it was fun to say it.
Well, Stewart, the Cranky Product Manager begs to differ with your highly controversial statements...
1) The Cranky PM is indeed a PM but is most definitely NOT a great person. "Pathetic," perhaps. "Great," no way. Ergo, PMs are _not_ all great people.
2) The Cranky PM is the One True Product Management Expert. Dare you challenge her?
(Sorry, in an odd mood this morning).
Should I re-word my first statement to say "Most PMs are great people"? You are right to a certain extent, there are those that choose not to improve their way of life.
My single challenge to your claim as the true expert... define a problem statement? Yes, consider this a challenge.
